Program Focus

Little Cogs builds the foundational skills young children need for school, using Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching, drawing on Language for Learning, early Reading Mastery, and early Connecting Math Concepts. Classroom readiness, early literacy and numeracy, fine motor skills, and language are taught explicitly, practised in short timed sprints, and charted daily.

Ideal for Students:

  • between the ages of 3 and 6
  • who would benefit from preparation before starting school
  • who are behind peers in language, fine motor, or early literacy and numeracy skills
  • who need stronger attention, sitting, and learning-to-learn behaviours

Component Skills Taught

Receptive and expressive language, vocabulary, listening comprehension, phonemic awareness, letter and sound knowledge, early reading, counting and number sense, fine motor skills and early handwriting, pencil grip and letter formation, and the classroom behaviours of sitting, attending, following instructions, and waiting.
The curriculum draws on Language for Learning and the early levels of the DI reading and maths sequences, with each component assessed, taught to mastery, and practised to fluency.

Outcome Focus

Children arrive at school ready to learn, with strong language, early literacy and numeracy skills, and the attention and behaviour needed to benefit from classroom instruction.

Parent Reviews

We appreciate the consistent, positive behavioral approach at Cognilab. It’s not just about academics; they taught our child crucial focus and task-completion skills. Sarah’s anxiety around new tasks has disappeared, and she’s become so much more independent in her homework routine. The staff are incredible—they make learning rewarding and fun.
