Program Focus
Cognilab Reading builds fluency across every component of skilled reading using Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching, drawing on Reading Mastery, Corrective Reading, and the Funnix sequence. Phonemic awareness, decoding, word recognition, oral reading fluency, and language comprehension are taught explicitly, practised in timed sprints, and charted daily.
Ideal for Students:
- from Pre-kindergarten to Year 12
- who are slow, effortful, or inaccurate readers
- who decode words but cannot read with expression or meaning
- who can read aloud but do not retain or understand what they read
- who lag behind peers on school reading tasks or NAPLAN
Component Skills Taught
Phonemic awareness (hearing, blending, and segmenting sounds), letter to sound correspondences, blending and decoding, sight word recognition of irregular high-frequency words, oral reading fluency at increasing text levels, vocabulary, and the listening and language comprehension skills that underpin reading for meaning.
The curriculum follows the Reading Mastery sequence for foundational learners and Corrective Reading for older learners with established gaps, with each component assessed, taught to mastery, and practised to fluency.
Outcome Focus
Learners read accurately, quickly, and with comprehension. Decoding becomes automatic, freeing attention for meaning. Reading stops being a barrier to learning across every other subject.
