Program Focus
Cognilab Expressive Writing builds fluency across every component of written expression, from penmanship through to editing, using Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching. Skills are taught explicitly, practised in short timed sprints, charted daily, and taken to fluency aims that predict retention and application.
Ideal for students:
- from Pre-kindergarten to Year 12
- who avoid or resist writing tasks
- whose handwriting is slow or effortful
- who can speak ideas but cannot get them onto the page
- whose writing lacks structure, grammar, or punctuation accuracy
- who lag behind peers on school writing tasks or NAPLAN
Component Skills Taught
Penmanship and transcription, sentence construction, grammar and syntax, punctuation and capitalisation, idea formation, ordering and sequencing ideas, paragraph and whole-text composition (narrative, recount, persuasive, informative, explanation, procedure), and independent editing and revision.
The curriculum draws on Language for Writing and Expressive Writing, with each component assessed, taught to mastery, and practised to fluency.
Outcome Focus
Learners complete writing tasks independently, with automatic handwriting, varied and accurate sentences, well-structured texts, and a routine editing process. The avoidance and anxiety that often surround writing are replaced by competence and confidence.
Our Learning Coaches
Our Coaches are trained individually in the Cognilab Method until they reach established proficiency, producing the dynamic, rewarding sessions that transform students’ academic and cognitive abilities.
Parent Reviews
We appreciate the consistent, positive behavioral approach at Cognilab. It’s not just about academics; they taught our child crucial focus and task-completion skills. Sarah’s anxiety around new tasks has disappeared, and she’s become so much more independent in her homework routine. The staff are incredible—they make learning rewarding and fun.
