Program Focus

Cognilab Reading Comprehension builds fluency in the language and thinking skills that produce deep understanding of text, using Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching, drawing on Reasoning and Writing and Comprehension A, B, and C. Vocabulary, inference, sentence and passage analysis, and text structure are taught explicitly, practised in timed sprints, and charted daily.

Ideal for Students:

  • from Pre-kindergarten to Year 12
  • who decode accurately but do not understand what they read
  • who answer literal questions but struggle with inference
  • who lose track of meaning across longer texts
  • who lag behind peers on comprehension tasks or NAPLAN

Component Skills Taught

Vocabulary breadth and depth, deductions and inferences, analysing sentences for meaning, identifying main ideas and supporting details, recognising text structures (narrative, expository, persuasive), drawing conclusions, evaluating arguments, and answering literal, inferential, and evaluative questions across text types.
The curriculum draws on Reasoning and Writing and the Comprehension series, with each component assessed, taught to mastery, and practised to fluency.

Outcome Focus

Learners read for meaning with confidence, infer beyond the literal text, and apply comprehension skills across subjects. Reading becomes a tool for learning rather than a task to get through.
