Program Focus

Cognilab Math builds fluency across every component of mathematical thinking using Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching, drawing on Connecting Math Concepts and Corrective Mathematics. Number facts, computation, fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, algebra, word problems, and the practical skills of using working paper and performing under test conditions are taught explicitly, practised in timed sprints, and charted daily.

Ideal for Students:

  • from Pre-kindergarten to Year 12
  • who count on fingers or rely on calculators for basic facts
  • who know procedures but cannot apply them to word problems
  • whose written maths work is messy, disorganised, or hard to follow
  • who freeze on timed tasks or maths assessments
  • who lag behind peers on school maths tasks or NAPLAN

Component Skills Taught

Numeration and place value, skip counting (forwards and backwards across all relevant intervals as the foundation for multiplication, division, and fractions), addition and subtraction facts, multiplication and division facts, multi-digit computation, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and proportions, measurement, basic algebra, and the structured analysis of word problems.

Penmanship for maths is taught alongside the curriculum: correct number formation, consistent digit size, aligned columns, and clear working. Learners are explicitly taught to use working paper, setting out problems in a way that supports accuracy, allows errors to be found, and produces work a teacher or examiner can follow.

Test skills are taught directly: reading questions carefully, allocating time, showing required working, checking answers, managing nerves on timed tasks, and applying strategies for multiple-choice, short-answer, and extended-response items.

The curriculum follows the Connecting Math Concepts sequence for developing learners and Corrective Mathematics for those with established gaps, with each component assessed, taught to mastery, and practised to fluency.

Precision Teaching Tools

Each maths skill is broken down to a measurable performance and practised in short, timed sprints. Tools include SAFMEDS (Say All Fast Minute Each Day Shuffled) for facts and concepts, fluency probes for computation, see-write and hear-write sprints, skip-counting sprints, and chained-skill practice for multi-step procedures. Performance is charted daily on the Standard Celeration Chart, with fluency aims set at the rates of accurate performance shown to predict retention, endurance, and application to new contexts. Practice continues until the aim is reached, then moves on.

Outcome Focus

Learners solve maths problems quickly and accurately, with automatic recall of facts, confident application of procedures, clearly set out working, and the skills to perform under test conditions. Strong component skills free working memory for higher-order problem solving.

Our Learning Coaches

Our Coaches are trained individually in the Cognilab Method until they reach established proficiency, producing the dynamic, rewarding sessions that transform students’ academic and cognitive abilities.

Parent Reviews

Cognilab Learning has been life-changing for our son, Alex. The team used their precise teaching methods to help him master his foundational reading skills in record time. For the first time, we are seeing daily, measurable progress on his fluency charts, which gives us complete confidence in the program. He genuinely loves going, and his self-esteem has skyrocketed!
